Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about coverage, cost, and how working with BMI actually feels.

About BMI

What does BMI stand for?

BMI stands for Better Mortgage Insurance, where our roots are, and for how we work today: Build. Manage. Innovate. What began in mortgage insurance grew into a full advisory practice.

Does BMI charge me for advice?

No. Our advice, plan comparisons, annual reviews, and claim support are free to you. We are paid a commission by the insurance company whose product you choose, and we disclose how that works before you apply. See How We Are Paid on our Disclaimers page.

Is BMI tied to one insurance company?

No. We are an independent brokerage and compare options from multiple insurers. We do not represent every insurer in the market, and we will always tell you which company a recommendation comes from.

Where is BMI located, and where do you work?

We are headquartered in Tsawwassen, British Columbia and serve clients across Canada. Most of our work happens by phone and video, so distance is never a barrier.

Coverage and products

What is the difference between term and whole life insurance?

Term covers you for a set period at a lower cost, which suits mortgages and young families. Whole life covers you for life and builds cash value over time. Many clients use a mix, and we will show you both side by side.

How is your mortgage protection different from the bank's insurance?

Coverage you own stays with you when you switch lenders, pays a benefit your family controls, and is underwritten up front so there are fewer surprises at claim time. Lender coverage typically protects the lender's balance and ends when you move your mortgage.

What are segregated funds?

Investment funds held inside an insurance contract. You can invest through a TFSA, RRSP, RESP, FHSA, or RDSP, with maturity and death benefit guarantees as set out in the contract and the option to name beneficiaries. Guarantees are provided by the issuing insurer; the Fund Facts and Information Folder explain the details.

What is Super Visa insurance?

Medical coverage for parents and grandparents visiting Canada on a Super Visa. IRCC requires proof of eligible coverage, and the requirements change from time to time, so we confirm the current rules with you before you buy.

What is critical illness insurance for?

It pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a covered condition such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke, with up to 25 critical illnesses included. You choose how to use it: treatment, time off work, travel, or paying down the mortgage while you recover.

Working with us

How does getting a quote work?

Three steps. You answer a few quick questions or book a call, your advisor compares options from multiple insurers, and once you choose we handle the application and underwriting from start to finish.

How long does it take to get covered?

It depends on the product and underwriting. Some coverage can be issued quickly; fully underwritten policies take longer because the insurer reviews your health details. We set expectations clearly before you apply.

What happens at claim time?

You call us, not a call centre. We help you or your family prepare the claim, submit it to the insurer, and stay on it until it is resolved.
